The Soay sheep research project on Hirta takes place with the permission of the National Trust for Scotland which owns the islands and Scottish Natural Heritage which has oversight of conservation on the islands. It could not operate without the logistical support of QinetiQ, and Eurest. The project is principally supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and genetic studies have been supported by the European Research Council. The project has also received funding from the Wellcome Trust and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
